What documents will I need to claim Maternity Allowance? You must give your national insurance number and may be asked to provide proof of identity, for example, a driving licence or birth certificate. If you are employed, you will need to send in form SMP1 that your employer will give you.
The earliest it can start to be paid is the 11th week before the baby is due. If you claim late, you can get Maternity Allowance backdated for up to three months if you would have been entitled to it earlier. It does not matter why your claim is late.

To apply for it, you'll need to be 26 weeks pregnant and you'll need to fill in a MA1 claim form \u2013 you can either fill it in online or print it out then fill it in. Either way, you'll need to print it out and send it to the address on the form.

You should get a decision on your claim within 20 working days. If you're eligible, a form will be sent to you confirming your entitlement and asking you to confirm your last day of employment before leave.
Maternity Allowance is paid every 2 or 4 weeks. All benefits, pensions and allowances are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit union account.
You must send us an SMP1 from your employer if you were employed up to and including the 15th week before the week your baby is due, even if you are no longer employed by them.
