In order to declare paternity digitally, the following conditions apply: The child must be born, or be expected to be born, in Norway. The mother must be unmarried and living in Norway. You must both have a Norwegian national identity number.
In addition to the first 12 months, each of the parents is entitled to one year of leave for each birth. This leave must be taken directly after the first year. If you are taking care of the child yourself, you are entitled to both the years. Other people who care for the child may also be entitled to leave.
Parents are entitled to a total of 12 months leave in connection with the birth and after the birth. These 12 months include the mothers right to leave for up to 12 weeks during the pregnancy and six weeks of leave reserved for the mother after the birth.
➢ As of 1 January 2020, all parents have joint parental responsibility. ➢ If the parents are not cohabiting, and the mother wants to have sole parental responsibility, she may notify the National Population Register ingly within one year after paternity has been established.
If at least one parent is a Norwegian citizen: The child automatically receives Norwegian citizenship at birth, regardless of where the birth occurs. If both parents are foreign nationals: The child does not automatically receive Norwegian citizenship.

Alternatively, you became Norwegian when you were born if your mother was Norwegian but not married at the time of your birth. If your mother was Norwegian, married and you did not acquire citizenship from your father when you were born, then you still became Norwegian at birth provided you were born in Norway.
After the child is born, the hospital sends a notice of birth to the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten), which then assigns the child a national identity number. This is an automatic procedure. The Norwegian Tax Administration then sends a form to the childs parents on which they submit the name of the child.
If you were born on 1 September 2006 or later and you have a Norwegian mother or father, you automatically became a Norwegian citizen at birth. This applies regardless of whether you were born in Norway or abroad, and regardless of whether or not your parents were married.
