R403. 3.6 Air-handling units. Air handling units shall not be installed in the attic when a home is brought into code compliance by Section R402. There are a number of new homes, particularly in South Florida, where installing air handlers in the attic is common.
The Florida Building Code (FBC) - Energy Conservation, 8th Edition sets standards for energy efficiency in building design and construction across Florida.
Climate Zone 1 consists of the following south Florida counties: Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach, and require a minimum R-30 attic insulation. All other Florida counties are considered to be in Climate Zone 2 and require a minimum R-38.
Depending on where you live and the part of your home youre insulating (walls, crawlspace, attic, etc.), youll need a different R-Value. Typical recommendations for exterior walls are R-13 to R-23, while R-30, R-38 and R-49 are common for ceilings and attic spaces.
ENERGYSTAR, recommends an R-value of R-38 for most homes. That translates to about 12 inches of insulation.
