What is the purpose of a hot work permit?

The Hot Work Permit system is intended to assure that the individuals involved in construction, renovation, repairs and maintenance of University facilities are aware of the hazards associated with hot work and welding and that they implement control measures to help mitigate them.

What activities require a hot work permit?

Hot-work permits are required for any operation involving open flames or producing heat and/or sparks and must be prepared by a competent person. Hot works include brazing, torch cutting, grinding, soldering and welding. Hot work must cease at least one hour before end of shift.

What are hot work requirements?

Hot Work Operational Requirements Hot work is allowed only in fire-safe areas or either designated areas or permitted areas. A designated area is a specific area designed or approved for such work that consists of non-combustible or fire-resistive construction.

How long is hot work permit good for?

How Long is a Hot Work Permit Valid? The duration of a hot work permit is limited to 30 days. These are guidelines. If there are conditions unique to the project or activities a contractor will be performing, exceptions can be made.
