The U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010 includes a provision requiring all non-profit hospitals to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The CHNA is the process by which a non-profit hospital evaluates the health needs of the community it serves.
Section 501(r)(3)(A) requires a hospital organization to conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) every three years and to adopt an implementation strategy to meet the community health needs identified through the CHNA.
The primary goal of a community needs assessment is to identify the physical, mental health, social, or public health needs in the community. For example, assessments evaluate how social determinants of health such as income level, education, and geographical location affect public health.
