If your vehicle is new (model year within the last four years) it is exempt from the testing requirements. If your vehicle is beyond the four-year exemption, however, please review Testing Requirement and Options. No paperwork from the vehicle purchase or from the DMV is required for this initial test.
Most people believe the VIN is just a series of random numbers and letters. But these characters are highly structured codes which have their own meaning. Vehicles from model year 1981 to present have a VIN made up of 17 characters (letters and numbers). The prior VIN length and format varied among vehicles.
Those who are new to Oregon may have questions about DEQ's Vehicle Inspection Program. Vehicles registered in the Portland Metro and Medford/Ashland area are required to pass an emissions test in order to register a vehicle. Then, the vehicle must be tested again every two years before the registration can be renewed.
You can get a free VIN check at the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), VehicleHistory.com or iSeeCars.com/VIN. Just pop in your car's digits and these sites will do the VIN lookup and give you information on the vehicle. But you should use more than one of these sites to get the full picture.
Please Note: The Oregon DMV charges a $7 fee for a VIN inspection at the time of registration, whether it is inspected through Oregon DEQ or DMV. Visit Oregon DMV for more information regarding VIN inspections.
