Depending on what time of day the death occurred, the autopsy may occur the same or next day. The autopsy results may take six to ten weeks to come back depending on the extent of the toxicology report, if one was necessary. The autopsy results come to the coroners office.
Q. How long does it take for the final autopsy report to be completed? A. Autopsy reports are usually completed within 60 days from the date of autopsy; however, there are cases which can take 90 days or longer depending on the complexity of the case.
The exam usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Many times, experts can figure out the cause of death in that time. But in other cases, you might have to wait until a lab can do more tests to look for signs of drugs, poisons, or disease. That can take several days or weeks.
That is, the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and spleen etc are removed in one block and then dissected on the autopsy table. The organs are dissected one-by-one and during the examination the forensic pathologist will collect small samples of tissue for further examination under the microscope.
An autopsy is done as soon as possible after death and takes about two to four hours to perform. The autopsy may be done on the entire body, which is a complete autopsy, or it may be limited to one area of the body.
