Dressage is incredibly hard, and in the beginning, its difficult to really understand what it is youre supposed to be doing in the first place. Beyond that, its even harder to get your brain to make your body do what it is that you want, even once you know what that is.
Introductory Level All working trot is rising. This is the basic point of introduction to dressage, so judges are not looking for anything too complicated: balance and steadiness in the hands, seat and tempo, shape of patterns, elastic contact, proper bend, and forward movement.
Most riders you see competing will be wearing a show jacket. This is a plain fitted blazer, typically black or navy. Most dark neutral colours are permitted; avoid any patterns or bright colours. Tweed (hacking) jackets are also an acceptable choice for dressage.
For a beginner, the best place to start with dressage is the Introductory level, as this will help you get a taste of what the sport is all about, and the training will help you to cover the basics, like walking, trotting, and cantering. Then, when you feel ready, you can move up to Preliminary and beyond.
You could start familiarizing yourself with the letters of the arena, or some basic dressage tests (intro or training level in the US) to prepare for what kinds of movements you may be asked to do. And reading books or watching videos never hurts. But mostly, just have fun and be patient with yourself.
