Grit City Trees is Tacomas free street tree program, offering residents trees, supplies, and support to help grow healthier neighborhoods. Open annually from July to early September, the program prioritizes equity by focusing on areas with low tree canopy and greater need.
Required trees shall attain a mature height and spread of at least 15 feet. Minimum Size Required Canopy Shade tree = 24 Box. Minimum Size Non-Required Canopy Shade Tree = 15-gallon container. Palm Trees are only allowable where listed in an approved community plan.
It is important when purchasing or building homes that residents consider existing infrastructure including trees as the City doesnt necessarily remove a tree because its in the way. To request a street tree to be removed, submit a request by contacting 9394 5000 or email must be submitted to the City.
Plant trees when the seedlings are dormant. Planting seasons can vary with weather conditions and elevation. In western Washington, most growers plant trees from January through April. In eastern Washington, most planting occurs in March and April.
