Special Olympics was inaugurated in 1968 and it was officially recognized on February 15, 1988. Its International headquarters are in Washington, D.C. It held every two years alternating between winter and summer sports and each lasting for nine days.
It was the first times the Games had taken place in Latin America, and the altitude proved an advantage in the events which needed a brief, but intense effort, such as short-distance running (up to 800m), jumping, throwing and weightlifting.
Special Olympics athletes are people who are 8 years old or older and who have an intellectual disability. There is no upper age limit, and in fact, nearly one-third of our athletes are age 22 or older.
