What is RCIA? The RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process through which non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass.
The Four Phases of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. There are 4 phases or stages in the Churchs process of preparation to enter the Church through baptism or by being received into full communion: Inquiry, the Catechumenate, Purification and Enlightenment, and Mystagogy.
Similar to RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults age 18 and over), RCIA adapted for Children (for Children Youth) is the formation process for children and youth between the ages of 7 and 17 who have not been validly baptized as recognized by the Catholic Church.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is comprised of one rite, which is divided into four periods. Each period designates a section of the pathway along each individuals journey of faith. At the end of each period, there is a community celebration (ritual), marking the transition from one period to the next.
The four stages are: Pre-Catechumenate (or Period of Inquiry), Catechumenate, Purification and Enlightenment, and Mystagogy.
