Official Site of The State of New Jersey You can personalize your license plates for a one-time fee of $50. An additional $50 fee is applied to reactivate the personalized plates in the event that the registration is expired for a period of more than two years.
Submit the application with a copy of your registration and a check or money order for $11 to the address on the application, or use return envelope if provided. Duplicate plates will be sent to you through the mail in approximately 10 - 12 weeks.
The plates are limited to 7 spaces, with each character taking a full space (ABCDEFG). If you have more than 4 choices, list the others on a separate sheet of paper. Staple a photocopy of your current registration to this application and enclose a check or money order (do not send cash) for $50 made payable to: NJMVC.
You must have 2 license plates: In New Jersey, all motor vehicles are required to have a license plate in the front AND the back of the vehicle. This goes for all types of motor vehicles, except for motorcycles, which are only required to have a license plate in the back.
