Under the Sharps (Healthcare) Regulations, all health workers must report a sharps injury. All workers should, regardless of where they work, report these injuries, not only for their own safety and wellbeing, but also to make employers investigate and prevent them re- occurring in the future.
The sharps injury log must contain, at a minimum, the type and brand of device involved in the injury (if known), the department or work area where the exposure incident occurred, and an explanation of how the incident occurred.
If you are at work, notify your supervisor or occupational health and safety officer - you will need to fill out an accident report form. Go straight to your doctor, or to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Sharps injuries must be reported to HSE under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) if: an employee is injured by a sharp known to be contaminated with a BBV, for example hepatitis B or C or HIV. This is reportable as a dangerous occurrence.
Wash the wound using running water and plenty of soap; leave under running water for a minimum of 10 minutes - ideally 20 minutes. Do not scrub or squeeze the wound whilst you are washing it. Do not the wound. Dry the wound and cover it with a waterproof plaster or dressing.
