Each year, over 20,000 people put their names into a lottery for the chance to view this special light show from Elkmont Campground in the Smokies. Only about 1,000 lucky winners will get drawn.
GATLINBURG, Tenn. Great Smoky Mountains National Park will host its annual synchronous firefly viewing opportunity at Elkmont from May 29-June 5.
The park uses soil temperatures to predict the optimal dates for the viewing opportunity in Elkmont. Natures unpredictability means that the peak of firefly activity can shift year by year. Since 1993, recorded peak dates have ranged from the third week of May to the third week of June.
Once the firefly viewing dates have been announced, visit the Recreation.gov Firefly event page to enter the lottery for vehicle reservations. Keep in mind that only one application per household will be accepted, and that you must enter the date that you want to attend as well as one alternate date.
