Whitstable Unit is thought to be the oldest Sea Cadets unit in the UK, set up in 1854 by a local vicar. On his return from the Crimean War and seeing so many young people on the street, he set up an orphanage. Originally known as the Naval Lads Brigade, the orphans were taught nautical skills by sailors.
The stipend starts at around $1,087 per month, but there is a catch. A portion of this stipend is, initially, used to pay for certain items such as uniforms, textbooks, and a laptop, so students wont have access to the full amount at first. As their time at the academy progresses, their disposable income increases.
For 12 to 18-year-olds, young people can join as a Sea Cadet and work their way up through the training programme. When cadets turn 18, they can either leave the Corps or they can stay and train as staff.
Annual enrollment fees range from $150 to $250 per year depending upon location. Uniform fees vary from $200 to $400 in the first year. Summer and winter training costs are typically $250 to $275 per week.
While our cadets gain an appreciation for the sea services and military life, there is no requirement to join the military. Many former cadets enlist, and dozens attend service academies or ROTC. Cadets who complete our recruit training are well prepared for the rigors of boot camp or officer indoctrination.
