Definition & Meaning

The gummy bear lab worksheet is an educational tool primarily used in science classrooms to facilitate a gummy bear experiment. This worksheet guides students through the scientific method by investigating how gummy bears change when soaked in water. The worksheet typically includes sections for students to document the objectives, materials, hypothesize, collect data, and analyze results, enhancing their understanding of scientific principles.

How to Use the Gummy Bear Lab Worksheet

Using the gummy bear lab worksheet involves several steps that align with the scientific method. Initially, students review the objectives, which provide direction on what the experiment seeks to discover. Participants then gather all required materials, including gummy bears and measuring tools, such as rulers and scales. The worksheet will prompt students to form hypotheses about the bears' transformations when submerged in water, noting their predictions in designated sections.

Steps to Complete the Gummy Bear Lab Worksheet

Completing the worksheet necessitates following a structured procedure:

  1. Preparation: Gather necessary materials listed in the worksheet, such as gummy bears, water, containers, scales, and rulers.

  2. Hypothesis Formation: Record initial predictions regarding changes in the gummy bears’ characteristics.

  3. Data Collection: Measure and note the size, mass, and other properties of the gummy bears before water immersion.

  4. Experiment Execution: Soak the gummy bears in water overnight as per the instructions provided.

  5. Post-Experiment Analysis: Measure the gummy bears again, documenting changes in the designated section of the worksheet.

  6. Data Comparison and Conclusion: Analyze the differences observed and draw conclusions based on the hypothesis and data.

The gummy bear in the lab is going to be a prime example for osmosis, which is the flow of water from an area of high concentration to low concentration. What determines the concentration is tonicity. In comparison to the cells (or items) concentration, a solution can be isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic.
In this experiment, the gelatin in the gummy bear acts like a cell membrane in living cells. The gummy bears get bigger or smaller after soaking in the liquids because of a process called osmosis. Osmosis lets water pass in or out of a cells membrane in an attempt to equalize the molecules inside and out.
Results of the osmosis experiment We can see that the gummy bear got the biggest in water and vinegar. Salt water had a higher concentration so water didnt enter the gummy bear. After 9 hours, we observed that the gummy bear left in pure water got much bigger than in the other solutions.
Final results, after being removed from the water.. As you can see, the gummy bear grew in all areas:length, width and depth. The gelatin kept the gummy bear from dissolving completely but the consistency did change from that of sponginess to a jellylike substance.
The movement of water in and out of the gummy bear, depending on the concentration of the surrounding collusion, reflects how water behaves across the cell membrane. In cells, osmosis is crucial for maintaining water balance and regulating cell volume.

Here, we conducted a scientific experiment with 3 experimental variables (water, salted water, vinegar) and a control variable (gummy bear that we didnt put into any solution). This enabled us to control every aspect that could influence the outcome of the experiment.
Today, the gummy bear is widely recognized as a symbol of popular consumerism and bygone childhood days; it has been replicated into gummy bear cartoons, stuffed animals, toysand art.
Pour the same amount of water into each of your bowls. Add salt to one of your bowls of water and leave the other with just plain water. Place a gummy bear into each of the bowls. Over time youll find that one of your gummy bears will start to swell. Look at the difference! Get the Unit of Work on Water Science here!
