The 25:10 rule states that if a child is unable to swim 25 meters continuously (no stopping) and unassisted, a parent must be within 10 feet of the child and actively watching them.
Aim for a pH level of between 7 and 7.6. If the water pH is higher than 8, anyone who swims in the pool is at risk of skin rashes, while a pH of lower than 7 can sting swimmers eyes. Some of the many factors that can affect your pools pH level include heavy rain, the number of swimmers in the pool and chemicals.
The best way to determine if a body of water is safe and the risk of water borne illness is low is to sample the water and check for Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. E. coli is commonly found in the intestines of humans and other mammals.
Check the disinfectant (chlorine or bromine) level and pH at least twice per day (and more often when the pool is in heavy use) to make sure they are within the recommended levels: For chlorine and bromine, follow the manufacturers instructions for your product.
A pool can lose up to 1/4 inch of water per day due to evaporation. In some cases, evaporative losses can be as high as 1/2 inch daily depending on factors such as wind, temperature, and humidity levels. If your pool is losing more than 1/4 inch of water a day, it may indicate an issue that requires attention.
