Open burning in Arizona is highly regulated for both fire safety and air quality. Most open burning is not allowed. There are limited occasions when you may be allowed to burn natural materials; however, the smoke must NOT be a nuisance to your neighbors or cause a vision obstruction.
Under Stage 2, even stronger stipulations are put in place, including no more campfires. And, if conditions continue to decline and extremely high fire danger becomes a threat to the public and our firefighters, closures will go into effect.
Stage 2 Fire Restrictions Prohibitions Building maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove including fires in developed campgrounds or improved sites is prohibited. Persons using a device fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is permitted.
Stage 3 Fire Restrictions prohibit the following activities: Such devices can only be used in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the device. (2) Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, is prohibited.
Check the land management websites (fs.fed.us, nps.gov and blm.gov) and enter the forest/area you are interested in. If its a Forest Service website, look at the box on the right side of the screen for current alerts and warnings, including fire restrictions, burn bans, and area closures.
