14-15 year old minors may not be employed during school hours, before 7am or after 7pm, more than three hours per day on school days, or more than 18 hours per week on school weeks. They may not work more than 6 days per week. Minors ages 16-17 may not work more than 9 hours per day or 50 hours per week.
Federal and state occupational restrictions are such that in most cases minors must be at least 14 years of age to begin working. Any minor who is at least 12 years of age may be issued a permit by school officials [EC 49111], however few occupations are available to them. (See Chapters 6 and 7 of this digest).
In most cases it is a two-step process, the minor along with the parent/guardian and employer fill out the B1-1 form and submit to the school local to the minors address. The school district reviews the B1-1 form and issues the B1-4 (Work Permit).
