The purpose of the matrix is to provide a standardized system for including building code-related data on a set of drawings that are submitted for building permit application. Numbers in the matrix are the relevant National Building Code (NBC) references.
The occupancy load is calculated by dividing the area of a room by its prescribed unit of area per person. Units of area per person for specific buildings can be found in the chart at the end of this article. For instance, the chart dictates that dormitories require 50 square feet of floor area for every room occupant.
According to California Building Code Standards, a bedroom is a room thats at least 70 square feet with 7.5-foot high ceilings, some sort of egress, and adequate heating and ventilation.
The Ontario Building Code stipulates that, for a room to be classified as a bedroom, it must have a minimum horizontal area of 7m (75ft) and no dimension less than 1.5m (4ft9in). The ceiling height must not be less than 2.13m (7ft) in at least 75% of the rooms area.
