If youre in the trucking game, youve probably heard of MCP (Motor Carrier Permit) and MC# (Motor Carrier Number)but do you really know the difference? Lets break it down! 🔹 MCP (Motor Carrier Permit) Issued by the California DMV, this permit is ONLY for carriers operating within California (intrastate).
Besides the difference in the agency that issues these permits, MCPs are also required for private carriers, who are exempt from the MC number requirement. If you plan to haul on California roads, even if your home base is in another state, youll need an MCP.
Most numbers are prefixed by MC, which stands for motor carrier.
How to Apply for an MCP Get a CA# from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) (see the FAQs for more information). Complete an Application for Motor Carrier Permit (MC 706 M) (PDF). Provide proof of insurance (see Insurance Requirements below). Provide proof of Workers Compensation insurance or signed exemption.
A motor carrier who operates only within the state of California must obtain a motor carrier of property permit from the Motor Carrier Services Branch, MCP Operations Unit of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The MCP is for California truckers. Essentially, it helps the various regulatory agencies link their information together to keep complete track of a truck. Besides the difference in the agency that issues these permits, MCPs are also required for private carriers, who are exempt from the MC number requirement.
