These 37 states have fully implemented the nurse licensure compact as of January 2024. Alabama. Arizona. Arkansas. Colorado. Delaware. Florida. Georgia. Idaho.
A multistate license allows the nurse to practice in all compact states/territories with one license issued by the home state. This eliminates the costly and time-consuming process of obtaining multiple single-state licenses when practicing with patients located in multiple NLC states.
The Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) is a nationally recognized, multi-state agreement that allows nurses to use their license to practice not only in their home state, but in all 34 states that have enacted the compact.
Nurses are required to be licensed in the state where the patient is located at the time service is provided. A multistate license allows the nurse to practice in all compact states/territories with one license issued by the home state.
The nurse is responsible for applying for licensure by endorsement in the new state of residence. The nurse may apply before or after the move. The multistate license of the former NLC state is changed to a single state license upon changing legal residency to a noncompact state.

After you get your degree and pass the NCLEX exam, youll be licensed in the state where you currently live. This is known as your primary state of residence, or PSOR. Your license is usually only valid in your PSOR. So, if you want to work in another state, youll have to get licensed in that state.
Applying for a multistate license must be done through your board of nursing (BON). Multistate licensure applications are available from your BONs website. This includes applications for: License by Exam (new graduates seeking to take NCLEX)
So, can you hold a nursing license in multiple states? The answer is yes! While it is possible to hold multiple state-specific licenses, a great option for nurses is the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). An added bonus: its less paperwork, too.
