Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are essential paddling safety items. They provide buoyancy to keep your head above water if you capsize. They can also make bracing, rolling and rescues easier by adding extra upward force when your upper body is in the water.
A helmet is strong recommended when paddling in whitewater and other swift currents. State law requires all children under 12 to wear a PFD while on a watercraft. State law also requires all people on a pleasure vessel less than 21 feet long to wear a PFD between November 1 and May 1.
The two main factors to consider when designing your boat ramp are slope and depth. The slope should be sharp enough to lower boats into the water without the boat trailer touching the water. However, the slope should not be so sharp that the towing vehicle is in danger of accidentally slipping into the water.
Kayaks, canoes, and other hand-powered vessels may launch at all NYC Parks-designated launch sites, as long as the vessels operator has a permit. Power and sailboats may not launch at kayak/canoe launch sites.
Please note that in New York State, lifejacket wear is required for all boaters under 12 years of age and for all recreational boaters (including paddle craft users) aboard a vessel less than 21 feet in length from November 1-May 1 (cold water months).
