ERCOT is funded by a System Administration Fee of 55.5 cents per MWh to cover its system costs. The cost to operate the electric grid and market for most of Texas averages about 50 -60 cents per month, or about $7 per year, for the average residential household.
ERCOT, through the Texas Interconnection, manages electricity across 214 of the states 254 counties (Exhibit 1). Select areas including El Paso, parts of the Texas Panhandle and the counties bordering Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma in East Texas are served by neighboring grids instead.
City leaders in 2015 sought to join the ERCOT grid when their contract with Xcel Energy expired, with one big benefit the move would eliminate the need to build a $700 million power plant to stay with SPP. Then in 2018, the City Council agreed to have the city join the states open marketplace.
Coverage Area. The ERCOT region encompasses about 75 percent of the land area in Texas, including the urban load centers of Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin, as well as most of West Texas, portions of the Panhandle and the Rio Grande Valley.
