Marylands Low Income Household Assistance Program (LIHWAP) provides free money to help eligible low income households pay water and wastewater bills. LIHWAP provides up to $2,000 to pay off past due or current water and wastewater bills.
The Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) provides financial assistance with home heating bills. Payments are made to the fuel supplier and utility company on the customers behalf.
The best way to start seeking help is by calling your utility company. They will provide you with information on a number of different assistance programs that are available to help low-income utility customers. Dollar Energy also partners with a network of Community Based Organizations throughout the state.
If eligible, customers may receive a grant for up to $2,000 towards their past due electric bill and up to $1,000 towards their past due gas bill. Customers must have a past due bill of $300 or greater to be considered eligible.
The Fuel Fund of Maryland accepts applications only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 AM to Noon. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received, with processing times of up to 10 business days due to high demand.
