A rotameter consists of a tapered tube, typically made of glass with a float (a shaped weight, made either of anodized aluminum or a ceramic), inside that is pushed up by the drag force of the flow and pulled down by gravity.
This type of flowmeters consists of a float inside a conical tube. The fluid flows up through the tapered tube forcing the float to a position with sufficient free area to enable the flow to pass. This free area is related to the flow rate, the weight of the float and the density and viscosity of the fluid.
Flow meters which operate on the float principle work via a vertically standing conical measurement tube made of glass, metal or plastic. The specially designed float can move up and down freely in it. ingly, the flow values can be read on the Rotameter scale at the height of the measurement edge of the float.
Rotameters are read at the top of the float against the scale on the flow body. Because of optical distortions, to get an accurate reading it is best to position yourself where you are at eye level with the top of the float and positioned in front of the measurement scale and not the side.
Every rotameter basically consists of two componentsa tapered metering tube made of glass, metal, or plastic and a float that rides within the tube. These components come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, weights, and materials of construction, making them adaptable to a wide range of application needs.

Most KOBOLD float type flow meters are read at the top of the float. Simply locate the top of the float and reference it to the scale printed on the outside of the flow meter. Make note of what units of measurement your scale in printed in to avoid misinterpretation of the flow rate.
