The process to apply for the CLP requires: Passing all the applicable knowledge tests for the class and endorsements desired. Complete the application for a CLP. Submitting a self-certification form and providing a valid medical examiner certificate, if applicable.
To obtain a Commercial Learner Permit, customers must pass the required written exam(s). Upon passing all necessary exam(s), the CLP may be issued the same day. For first-time CLP applicants, CDL General Knowledge Exam is required to be taken and passed prior to any other commercial exams.
Temporary Permit / Probationary Driver Licensing Under Age 18. At age 15 years and six months, an applicant may complete the knowledge test online at Ohio BMV - Online Services; or go to any driver exam station to take the knowledge test and vision screening, to begin the temporary permit process.
The Ohio LTAP Center, as a program within the Ohio Department of Transportations Office of Local Programs, is providing CDL Theory training free of charge via eLearning. Ohio LTAP is not providing Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training.
