Effective, January 1, 2022, SB 1383 requires all residents and businesses to recycle organic material. Organic material is defined as food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, wood and lumber, paper products (printing paper, cardboard, all fiber etc.), manure, biosolids, digestate, and sludge.
When possible, please rinse and drain cans before recycling. Cans with California Redemption Value (CRV) can also be taken to a buyback location. To find one near you, use the search engine found here. Note that it is best not to crush cans before recycling.
What is California Redemption Value (CRV)? Consumers pay a California Redemption Value (CRV) fee when they purchase beverages and receive CRV refunds when they redeem containers at a recycling center or retailer (called a dealer in the program).
*Effective January 1, 2024, this includes beverage containers that are boxes, bladders or pouches containing wine, distilled spirits, wine coolers, or distilled spirit coolers. The CRV refunds are: 5 cents for containers less than 24 ounces. 10 cents for containers 24 ounces or larger.
