The buyer takes the signed title, proof of Kentucky Insurance, proof of Identification, and money for fees and applicable taxes to their local County Clerks office for transfer. Older Titles before 2000 may require a completed TC96-182 to complete the transfer process.
Application for Title/Registration Form (TC96-182). The Owner/Buyer and Seller (if the ownership is changing) sections must be signed and notarized.
It is always recommended that both the buyer and the seller be together for the transfer, to ensure all documentation has been properly processed. *Note: We advise both seller and buyer to be present to transfer ownership of a title.
Original Kentucky Title The back of the title must be completed in its entirety. Sellers section is on the left. Must include: current mileage, the sale price, complete addresses, SSN for buyer(s), buyer(s)s birth month. The seller(s) and the buyer(s) must sign and have their signature notarized.
If you have lost your original title, you must apply for a duplicate title before any change of ownership; updates or lien recordings may be done. Application is made at your local county clerks office. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet prints the title the following workday and mails the title to the owner.
