The overall manners and responsiveness of the ranch riding horse to make timely transitions in a smooth and correct manner, as well as the quality of the movement are of primary considerations. The ideal ranch riding horse should have a natural head carriage at each gait.
Point ranges identify the levels that exhibitors and horses are eligible for when competing at AQHA shows. Owners and exhibitors can view the 2024 point ranges and compare their show record for an approximation of the levels they will be eligible for in the 2024 show season.
Each horse will work individually, performing both required and optional maneuvers, and scored on the basis of 0 to 100, with 70 denoting an average performance. Each maneuver will receive a score that should be added or subtracted from 70 and is subject to a penalty that should be subtracted.
Judges note horses that are free-moving, looking through the bridle, and exhibiting that they could cover long distances in a comfortable fashion. A full drape rein is not recommended, and light contact is encouraged. A horse that can also smoothly transition from one gait to the next will be rewarded.
You should have good control of the walk, trot and lope, and also be able to show off some speed variations, such as extension at these three gaits. Judges are also looking at the actual transitions to see how changes between the various gaits are performed.
