CalWORKs Exemption Request Form (CW 2186A) The CW 2186A is a required form that must be given to a client when they indicate they may have a condition or circumstances that would prevent them from participating in CalWORKs Welfare-To-Work activities. The CW 2186A must be completed and signed by the client.
You will not be required to participate in the Welfare-to-Work program and your Welfare-to-Work 24-Month Time Clock will stop if any of the reasons below apply to you. You are under 16 years old. You are 16, 17, or 18 years old and in high school or adult school. You are 60 years or older.
The Hourly Requirement During those 60 months, you must spend a minimum number of hours each week doing Welfare-to-Work activities, unless you are exempt. The exact number of hours depends on your situation. If you are single: 30 hours per week if there are no children under age 6.
Once your WTW 24-Month Time Clock ends, if you do not meet your new participation requirements, your cash aid may be lowered and it may affect your supportive services. There are reasons that can give you more time (an extension) on your WTW 24-Month Time Clock.
A parent of a child 0 23 months old can have an exemption one time during the parents lifetime. During this exemption, which is a year longer than is usually allowed for a baby, that parent wont have to do Welfare-to-Work activities.

Good Cause means a CalWORKs client has a temporary, good reason not to do their WTW activity. Examples of good cause include an illness, injury, or loss of access to transportation or childcare. Clients should talk with their county worker if they are facing a challenge and they have a good reason not to participate.
The general work requirements include registering for work, participating in SNAP Employment and Training (ET) or workfare if assigned by your state SNAP agency, taking a suitable job if offered, and not voluntarily quitting a job or reducing your work hours below 30 a week without a good reason.
