The answer is that you should follow the general obstruction rules of NFPA 13. For obstructions below 18 inches for standard pendent and upright spray sprinklers this means that as long as the obstruction is less than 4ft (1.2 m) wide that it is not considered an obstruction.
1.3 lays out the Three Times Rule which states that unless specific requirements are met that sprinklers shall be positioned away from obstructions a minimum distance of three times the maximum dimensions of the obstruction, up to a maximum of 24 inches (0.6096 m) though the maximum clear distance does not apply
The frequency of testing of fire sprinkler systems in accordance with NFPA 25 is as follows: Quarterly Testing of main drain and mechanical alarm devices. Semi-Annually Test vane and pressure switch type devices. Annually Comprehensive test of fire sprinkler system should be performed.
The three times rule found in NFPA 13 states that sprinklers shall be positioned away from obstructions a minimum distance of three times the maximum dimension of the obstruction. For example, if a ceiling fan hub measures 4 inches by 7 inches, the sprinkler must be positioned at least 21 inches away from the hub.
This is because the only goal of the system is to provide the occupants with enough time to escape the home in the event of a fire. For that reason, NFPA 13D only requires that the water duration be 10 minutes. Excerpt taken from NFPA LiNK. To view section, click here.
