Students may only receive federal aid for up to 180 hours in a program. If you exceed this limit, you are no longer eligible for Pell Grants, federal loans, or other federal assistance. However, this is relatively uncommon; students typically complete undergraduate programs in 120 credit hours.
Excess credit hour (ECH) policies assess a tuition surcharge for credits taken beyond a predetermined threshold, usually between 115 percent and 130 percent of a degrees typical required credits, and are currently in place in nine states (see table at the end of this release).
I have overloaded three out of four semesters at Arcadiaby choice. Overloading is when you take more than 18 credits per semester; the usual course load is 16. We arent allowed to overload while doing FYSAE, so my first Spring semester was normal.
An overload is defined as registration for more than 48 units for an undergraduate. This limit corresponds to five 9-unit classes plus a 3-unit non-academic class (PE, PVA, SA) or four 9-unit classes plus one 12-unit class.
Answer. An academic or credit overload occurs when an undergraduate student registers for more than 20 credits per quarter or more than 12 credits in a 5.5-week term, or when a graduate student registers for more than 16 credits per quarter or more than 12 credits in a 5.5-week term.
