Large Ponies 13.2-14.2 hh. In order to compete in a Pony division at an A show, ponies must go to the show and be measured by the steward in order to have their size officially recorded. Then they receive a pony card which serves as proof that they are competing in the appropriate division.
Considering the top height of a pony is 14 hands and 2 inches, or 58 inches; and the smallest pony is hardly ever under 7 hands and 2 inches, or 30 inches, (excluding dwarf and freak minis), the average would technically be 44 inches, or 11 hands. In American hunter shows, 11 hands is considered WAY TOO SMALL!
Small ponies are 12.2 hands (50 inches, 127 cm) and under, medium ponies are over 12.2 but no taller than 13.2 hands (54 inches, 137 cm), and large ponies are over 13.2 hands (54 inches, 137 cm) but no taller than 14.2 hands (58 inches, 147 cm).
Original is to first establish our horse or ponys height. A temporary card is issued to animals under 8 years of age. A permanent/standard card is issued after measurement occurs at 8 years old and over.
For some competitions, ponies have to be measured to obtain an official pony card. The card puts them in the appropriate height category: Small ponies measure 12.2 hands and under. Medium ponies measure 12.3 hands to 13.2 hands.

Place the vertical arm of the measuring stick squarely on the ground and the horizontal arm of the stick over the highest point of the withers (Figure 1). Measurements taken anywhere other than the highest point of the withers will not be considered representative of the animals true height.
