Most U.S. airlines will permit children who have reached their fifth birthday to travel unaccompanied. Kids ages 5 through 11 who are flying alone must usually travel pursuant to special unaccompanied minor procedures. On some airlines, these procedures are required for unaccompanied children as old as 14.
Southwest will allow children ages 12 through 17 to travel alone as Young Travelers (YTs).
Children traveling alone For safety, we require children age 5 14 traveling alone to use our unaccompanied minor service. This service is optional for children age 15 17, but if requested, then the fee applies. The unaccompanied minor fee is $150 each way, plus applicable taxes*, in addition to the ticket price.
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and many others have similar policies for domestic flights, with a cutoff age of 2 years old. On international flights, there is no fare for lap infants, but fees may apply. In most cases, youll need to add the infant to the adults ticket.
Delta provides special services for children who are flying by themselves. Children 5-14 years of age traveling without an adult (18 years plus) are considered an Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) and must participate in the UMNR program. Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) service is mandatory for ages 5-14.
