The Virginia State Board for Community Colleges, on a recommendation from the Thomas Nelson College Local Advisory Board, voted to change the name of the College to Virginia Peninsula Community College.
Thomas Nelson, the fourth governor of Virginia, a Revolutionary War hero, and signer of the Declaration of Independence, was the schools original namesake, but school officials decided to change the name as he was also a slave owner.
The name change is intended to distance the school from images that go against the institutions mission, vision, values and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. John Tyler, a Virginia native and the 10th president of the United States, owned slaves and was a supporter of the Confederacy.
