If you are not sure whether your horse has been previously passported, you will need to make enquiries with the Passport Issuing Organisations (PIOs) to check if the passport was originally issued by them. A full list of approved PIOs is available from Defra.
All horses, ponies and donkeys must have a horse passport. The passport helps: make sure horses treated with certain medicines dont end up as food for people. prevent the sale of a stolen horse, pony or donkey, as the passport proves its identity.
Replace a lost passport Contact the PIO that issued the original passport to request a duplicate or replacement. If you do not know which PIO this is, you can apply for a duplicate or replacement from another PIO . Apply to a PIO that manages studbooks if you have a pedigree.
The most up-to-date version is the red covered passport, which is bound together using two rivets. All pages contained within the passport have Equine passport written in the background diagonally across the pages.
The first three digits represent a country code, the next three digits relate to the PIO which issues the passport and the last nine digits are issued by the PIO to identify each equine registered with it; The microchip number (this is not the same as the UELN.
