Lawnside is a borough in Camden County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Lawnside was developed in 1840 and incorporated in 1926 as the first independent, self-governing Black municipality north of the MasonDixon line. The United Parcel Service has a large depot in the borough.
Lawnside in Camden County, originally called Free Haven and later Snow Hill, was the first Black town in the state to become incorporated. You may also have heard of Springtown and Gouldtown in Cumberland County.

Lawnside Notables: Peter Mott settled in the free black community known as Snow Hill with his wife Elizabeth. In 1907 Snow Hill was renamed Lawnside which became the only antebellum, black community to become an incorporated municipality in the State of N.J.
In 1840 the land developed as Lawnside was purchased by Abolitionists for freed and escaped slaves. On April 20, 1926, all who could, passed through the doors of the public school on Warwick Road to cast their ballot in the Official Special election of the borough of Lawnside.
