An order to show cause (O.S.C.), is a court order or the demand of a judge requiring a party to justify or explain why the court should or should not grant a motion or a relief . For example, if a party requests a restraining order from a judge, the judge may need more information.

WHAT IS AN ORDER TO SHOW CAUSE? The Court may issue an Order to Show Cause to tell you that you did not follow the Courts rules, directions, or deadlines and/or to instruct you to file one or more documents by a certain date.
The orders to show cause, any agreed orders, and any orders that do not require notice, shall be presented without oral argument through the clerks office to the Ex Parte and Probate Department. The moving party shall obtain the order to show cause first before filing the note for hearing.
