States that Allow Apprenticeships as a Path to Becoming a Licensed Barber Alabama 2,000 hours. Alaska 2,000 hours. Arkansas 480 hours (60 days) California 3,200 hours. Delaware 3,000 hours; or 1,500 hours plus 600 hours of coursework. District of Columbia 1,500 hours. Georgia 3,000 hours.
A barber apprenticeship is a training program where aspiring barbers work with an experienced barber, learning how to cut and style hair effectively. Besides attending barbering school, an apprenticeship is often the only other way to obtain a barbers license.
(a) The course for Barber apprentice requires 3000 hours of training, including 180 hours of theory, in a registered barber shop approved to administer training for the Class A barber certificate; (b) Training must not be completed in less than 18 months.
Barbers are regulated and licensed in all 50 states (Alabama recently enacted licensure requirements for barbers; the last state to do so in the U.S.). Like other professions involving the health and beauty industry, barbers must be licensed because their work is directly related to public health.
Licenses are required for cosmetologists, hairstylists, manicurists, skincare specialists, barbers, hair braiders, and beauticians.
