Become a Firefighter You must be 18 years of age to apply, a high school graduate or GED, possess a valid drivers license, no felony or multiple misdemeanor convictions or multiple traffic violations. You must be able to pass a written exam, physical agility exam, polygraph exam, background check and a medical exam.
The Academy is 16 weeks and taught by BGFD instructors and the Kentucky Fire Commission. Academy participants do not stay overnight, and will not be away from their families. Recruits attend the local Academy like a 40-hour work week.
The recruit class is usually 4 to 5 months; doing 40-hour work weeks. In recruit class, you will obtain your Fire Administration Orientation; Kentucky State Fire Certification of 400 hours; and an introduction to the Emergency Medical Services or review depending of EMT or EMT-P status.
Upcoming Courses The Tallahassee Fire Academy course requires 492 hours of training (including 1st Responder) and is offered twice a year as a part-time academy which lasts approximately 22 weeks.
