The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science is Mississippis only public, residential high school specifically designed to meet the needs of the magnolia states most academically gifted and talented students with an emphasis in STEM education.
MSMS is a public high school, so there is no application fee and admitted students do not pay tuition or book fees. However, because we are a residential school, families must pay $500 per semester for housing and meals and approximately $200 per year for miscellaneous fees.
Nationally, the highest ranked Mississippi school is Ocean Springs High School, which earned a No. 682 national ranking. Ocean Springs High School is the only Mississippi school in 2024 to break 1,000 on the rankings list. The next highest school, Lewisburg High School in Olive Branch, ranked 1,464.
Right now we have an acceptance rate right at 50 percent, executive director Germain McConnell told The Clarion-Ledger. Three or four years ago, those on the alternate list could have easily gotten into the school.
There were about 1,400 applicants to the residential program this year and with just 340 spots for each entering junior class, they have a 24 percent acceptance rate. In addition to the competitive academic criteria, the school selects students based on congressional district and gender.
