To be eligible for the CMA exam, you must complete a certification program that has been accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. These can be done online, through a technical school, or through a degree program.
CMAs are required to earn 30 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits per year, including two in the area of ethics.
Youll need a bachelors degree in accounting to become a CMA, but you can start with a two-year associate degree if that better fits your time frame and finances. From there, you can work while completing your bachelors degree, which will take another two years.
The IMAs core professional requirements include two years of continuous full-time work experience in financial management and/or management accounting. Part-time experience may qualify if it includes eligible duties and covers at least 20 hours per week. In this case, two part-time years equal one full-time year.
The fastest you can realistically become a CMA is about 3 to 4 months, but most students take 6 to 9 months depending on program length and exam scheduling. Choosing an accelerated accredited program and preparing for the exam in advance is the key to speeding things up.
