US 71s southern terminus is between Port Barre and Krotz Springs, Louisiana at an intersection with U.S. Route 190. For the entirety south of Kansas City, Missouri, US 71 runs parallel and concurrent with the existing and future Interstate 49.
The project will widen SR-71 between Interstate 10 and the Los Angeles/San Bernardino County line to convert the existing 4-lane expressway to a full 8-lane standard freeway and provide carpool lanes on SR-71 between Interstate 10 and State Route 91.
Sign Route 71 was announced as one of the original Signed State Routes in the August 1934 California Highways Public Works. Sign Route 71 originated at US 66 near Claremont and followed LRN 19 south towards Pomona. From Pomona, Sign Route 71 followed the entirety of LRN 77 to US 80 near San Diego.
