Although the vaccine is very effective, it does not prevent all types of meningitis, so its still important to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis even if youve been vaccinated.
The MenB vaccine offers protection against meningococcal group B bacteria, which are a common cause of meningitis in young children in the UK. The vaccine is recommended for babies aged 8 weeks, followed by a second dose at 12 weeks and a booster at 1 year.
CDC recommends meningococcal vaccination for all preteens and teens, as well as other children and adults at increased risk. Meningococcal vaccines are the best way to protect against meningococcal disease, but side effects can occur.
All 11- to 12-year-old adolescents should receive a MenACWY vaccine. Since protection wanes, CDC recommends a MenACWY booster dose at age 16 years. The booster dose provides protection during the ages when adolescents are at highest risk.
Exemptions: Students may begin classes without a certificate of immunization against meningococcal disease if: 1) the student has a letter from a physician stating that there is a medical reason why he/she cant receive the vaccine; 2) the student (or the students parent or legal guardian, if the student is a minor)
