A dog license is required for dogs four months of age or older unless the dog is used as a service dog.
The IRS considers most pet-related expenses routinely personal and therefore, not deductible (exceptions apply, however, such as for service animals).
All cats and dogs residing in Norfolk are required to have a license once they reach the age of 4 months. A current rabies certificate is required in order to obtain a license. Additionally, documentation that your animal has been spayed or neutered is required in order to receive the reduced rate.
The tax for each dog or cat shall not be more than $10 for each year or $50 for a lifetime license issued pursuant to subsection B of 3.2-6530. If the dog or cat has been spayed, the tax shall not exceed the tax provided for a male dog or cat.
