Research has found that chronic anxiety increases the sympathetic nervous systems response to stress. This response releases histamine, a substance the body usually releases to respond to inflammation or allergic reactions. An increased release of histamine may lead to a rash or hives.
Food allergy anxiety happens when the fear of coming in contact with an allergen and/or experiencing an allergic reaction interferes with a persons ability to function on a daily basis. Food allergy anxiety can appear in anyone who has been diagnosed with a food allergy or suspects he or she may have a food allergy.
Our results showed that patients with atopic dermatitis had an increased risk for several comorbidities including OCD (OR = 2.0; 95% CI =1.52.7), anxiety disorders (OR = 1.5; 95% CI = 1.41.7), depressive episodes and sleep disorders (OR = 1.4, 95% CI = 1.31.6; OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.62.0) (Table 2).
Eosinophilic esophagitis, or EoE, is a chronic disease that can be associated with food allergies. It is increasingly being diagnosed in children and adults. EoE is characterized by immune cells called eosinophils building up in the esophagus. Symptoms of EoE include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain after eating.
