The fastest you can realistically become a CMA is about 3 to 4 months, but most students take 6 to 9 months depending on program length and exam scheduling. Choosing an accelerated accredited program and preparing for the exam in advance is the key to speeding things up.
To be eligible for the CMA exam, you must complete a certification program that has been accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. These can be done online, through a technical school, or through a degree program.
The RMA exam consists of 200 multiple-choice sections. Topics covered include general medical assistant knowledge, administrative medical assisting, and clinical medical assisting. Many medical assistants who have taken both exams state that the RMA exam is slightly easier than the CMA exam.
On average, traditional certificate programs take between four and nine months, while an associates degree in medical assisting can take up to two years to complete.
Medical assistant programs can take between 8 weeks and 24 months, depending on the format. CALRegional administers an 8-week hybrid training program, one of the fastest options available in California and Texas. Programs that include an externship typically add 40 to 160 hours of real-world experience.
