Big Cypress Swamp, large forest morass lying mainly in Collier county, southern Florida, U.S., and covering 2,400 square miles (6,200 square km). The region merges into the swampy Everglades to the east and south. It is dominated by cypress trees, and wildlife is abundant.
The fundamental difference between Big Cypress and the Everglades is that Big Cypress is mainly a cypress swamp while the Everglades is a prairie that is submerged by a slow moving and very shallow sheet of water created by the yearly overflow of Lake Okeechobee. The water in the Big Cypress swamp is rainwater.
Established October 11, 1974, Big Cypress is Americas first national preserve. The preserve is 729,000 acres. Thats larger than Rhode Island. Approximately one million visitors visit the preserve each year.
There are two scenic drives along dirt roads at Big Cypress National Preserve, the Turner River-Upper Wagonwheel-Birdon Road Loop and the Loop Road. Both form loops by using the paved Tamiami Trail (Highway 41).
Over tens of thousands of years, Big Cypress Swamp hosted all sorts of groups, from the Calusa and sixteenth century European explorers to the Miccosukee and Seminole. Its 1974 establishment as the nations first national preserve marked the collaboration of many groups dedicated to preserving the natural swampland.
