Upon completion of the program, naturopathic medical graduates must pass Entry to Practice board exams and required jurisdictional exams. Only then, are they a fully qualified Naturopathic Doctor or Doctor of Naturopathy with the ND designation after their name.
Students must complete a 4 year medical program after their undergraduate degree. Graduates of these medical programs are eligible to practice in any state in which they meet the licensing requirements. Not all states allow naturopathic physicians to practice the full scope of their field.
A licensed naturopathic doctor (ND) attends a four-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical school and is educated in all of the same basic sciences as an MD/DO, but also studies holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness.
Among the 23 states regulating naturopathic doctors, nine states legally allow naturopathic doctors to use the title naturopathic physician. States may have additional requirements for naturopathic doctors, such as clearly communicating to patients the naturopathic doctors educational background and training.
